A young man, whose name was later leanrt to be Alabibu Olushola, caused panic at Murital Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) this morning, December 2.

According to reports, the young man, who airport users thought was a terrorist, appeared at the Lagos airport with a rock sack (a black bag) and approached a Medview plane that was taxiing. However, the captain of the plane noticed him and used high engine thrust to blow him away.

This gave him burns and sores but he still quickly got up, limped from the tarmac and ran into a bush nearby. The airport security officials however ran after him and caught up with him after a hot chase. The airport was later shut down and vigorous search was conducted.

Nine dead, over 8 injured as Taskforce open fire on protesting IPOB members in Onitsha

The peaceful protest embarked upon on Tuesday by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, against the continued incarceration of Mr. Nnamdi Kalu the Radio Biafra Director, turned bloody at about 1.30 am early hours of Wednesday, after an alleged encounter by the Joint Military Taskforce comprising, Army, Navy, Police and Civil Defense, who clashed at Niger Bridge Head with some members of the IPOB who vowed to continue their blockage of the bridge for three days until Kanu is released.

The encounter left about nine people dead, five at Niger Bridge Head, three at Obodoukwu Road, a Suya meat seller said to have been hit by stray bullet who died instantly.

Miscreants on hearing that some people have been shot dead by the joint Military taskforce went into another protest, marched to the Central mosque at near Onitsha Main Market and set it, a Hilux Pick Up van with federal Government number was also burnt when the Joint Military Taskforce held motorist and commuters hostage at Upper Iweka with sporadic shooting that has never been witnessed before in Onitsha.

UNN students cry out over N75,000 laptop fee

ENUGU—Students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, yesterday, urged the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu to quickly intervene over the compulsory laptop fee foisted on them by the university authority.

New students of the university, who spoke to newsmen in separate interviews, described the N75,000 compulsory laptop levy as arbitrary.

It was gathered that the university administration had recently introduced a mandatory policy, wherein all the students are being forced to own a laptop.

One of the new students described the policy as inhuman, noting that, “it is so sad that they are making education so difficult for the poor.

“With this policy, we would now be paying close to N200,000 in a federal university per session. This is wickedness.

“As I speak to you, I’m helpless because my parents don’t have that kind of money. It is wrong for anyone to make computer ownership compulsory. It should be a matter of choice. The management should not use us to make money.”

Also speaking another student called on the education minister to call the vice chancellor to order.

“We are begging the minister to urgently intervene because they are turning this university to a market place.

“If the vice chancellor is interested in doing laptop business, he should find a market for it, not placing such burden on poor students.

“Some of our parents are leaving on N18,000 minimum wage; now they want them to pay N200,000 as school fees for one session. This is wickedness of the highest order. This computer ownership should be by choice,” he stated.

Fuel subsidy increased from N413 Billion to N521 Billion

The controversial fuel subsidy claims as contained in the 2015 Supplementary Budget presented to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari has risen from N413 billion to N521 billion.

The original N413 billion subsidy claim included N120.552billion outstanding claims from 2014 and N292.8 billion to cover claims from January to September.

MTN’s N1.04trn Fine: Buhari meets Zuma in Johannesburg

President Muhammadu Buhari and his South African counterpart, President Jacob Zuma, are to meet in Johannesburg this week to discuss MTN’s $5.2billion fine, South Africa-based Sunday Times has reported.

Both leaders are expected to meet and discuss the fine along the sidelines of the Forum of China-Africa Co-operation, the newspaper reported yesterday. The event takes place on December 4-5 at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The newspaper, however, reports that the South African government has been unwilling to confirm or deny its involvement in the MTN matter.

Clayson Monyela, spokesman for the Department of International Relations, told the Sunday Times that government was monitoring the development with keen interest. “The matter between MTN and Nigeria is between a private company and issues of compliance in a market they do business in,” Monyela told the newspaper.

Meanwhile, the expected meeting between the two heads of state comes after the minister of communications, Adebayo Shittu, said last Wednesday that Buhari will decide MTN’s fate regarding the fine.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) fined MTN $5.2billion for failing to disconnect five million unregistered SIM cards in a timely manner. Nigeria’s SIM card registration process is designed to curb terror and criminal threats in the country.

The fine, which Denmark-based Strand Consult said is the biggest of its kind in history, has rattled the South African headquartered MTN whose share price shed about fifth of its value amid the penalty.

MTN’s group chief executive officer, Sifiso Dabengwa, subsequently quit while the company’s former CEO, Phuthuma Nhleko, was then appointed as executive chairperson and charged with the responsibility of tackling the fine.

Talks between MTN and the NCC regarding the fine are said to be ongoing with Nhleko having visited Nigeria. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) is also investigating MTN for how it announced its fine to shareholders.
