Buhari denies receiving $300,000 compensation from Jonathan

President Muhammadu Buhari has denied allegations that his predecessor President Goodluck Jonathan gave him a monetary compensation of $300,000 after Boko Haram terrorists attacked his convoy in Kaduna last year.

In early day parliamentary motion was filed by MPs Tom Elliott and Danny Kinahan of the Ulster Unionist Party (UPP), ironically a party dedicated to preserving the territorial integrity of the UK.

The motion is that this “House recognises the calls for the independence of territories that constituted the Biafran republic.”

“The Biafran issue could be improved with the co-operation of the Nigerian government by offering a referendum; and urges the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to use its diplomatic strength to assist in the resolution of this matter.”

Bishop Kukah to Buhari: “Nnamdi Kanu is worth doing business with”

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, says the federal government should start seeing Radio Biafra Director, Nnamdi Kanu as someone that can be dialogued with.

Bishop Kukah advised President Buhari to attempt to work with Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), rather than prosecute him.

US Presidential Candidate, Ben Carson Set To Visit Nigeria Next Year

US Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson is planning to visit Nigeria in a tour of three African countries. 

 The retired neurosurgeon who said he has traced his roots back to Africa, Kenya precisely, said he was visiting Nigeria to see things happening in the country’s northeast firsthand; “get an ideal from the people what the effects of Boko Haram are, what people are thinking, to see what the economic situation is there…,” Carson told told America’s Hugh Hewitt Show. Carson also plans to visit Babcock University whose medical school is named after him. Asked whether he thinks American ground troops ought to be committed in Nigeria if they are requested by President Muhammadu Buhari to assist in the eradication of Boko Haram, Ben Carson says “…maybe we can work with some of the government troops in Nigeria with our Special Ops people and various tactical advantages, which would help tremendously rather than committing a bunch of American troops to this effort.”

MTN’s N1.04trn Fine: Buhari meets Zuma in Johannesburg

President Muhammadu Buhari and his South African counterpart, President Jacob Zuma, are to meet in Johannesburg this week to discuss MTN’s $5.2billion fine, South Africa-based Sunday Times has reported.

Both leaders are expected to meet and discuss the fine along the sidelines of the Forum of China-Africa Co-operation, the newspaper reported yesterday. The event takes place on December 4-5 at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The newspaper, however, reports that the South African government has been unwilling to confirm or deny its involvement in the MTN matter.

Clayson Monyela, spokesman for the Department of International Relations, told the Sunday Times that government was monitoring the development with keen interest. “The matter between MTN and Nigeria is between a private company and issues of compliance in a market they do business in,” Monyela told the newspaper.

Meanwhile, the expected meeting between the two heads of state comes after the minister of communications, Adebayo Shittu, said last Wednesday that Buhari will decide MTN’s fate regarding the fine.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) fined MTN $5.2billion for failing to disconnect five million unregistered SIM cards in a timely manner. Nigeria’s SIM card registration process is designed to curb terror and criminal threats in the country.

The fine, which Denmark-based Strand Consult said is the biggest of its kind in history, has rattled the South African headquartered MTN whose share price shed about fifth of its value amid the penalty.

MTN’s group chief executive officer, Sifiso Dabengwa, subsequently quit while the company’s former CEO, Phuthuma Nhleko, was then appointed as executive chairperson and charged with the responsibility of tackling the fine.

Talks between MTN and the NCC regarding the fine are said to be ongoing with Nhleko having visited Nigeria. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) is also investigating MTN for how it announced its fine to shareholders.

Biafra: Transfer me to prison custody, Kanu begs court

Hundreds of agitators for the creation of Biafra Republic, yesterday, besieged an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Wuse Zone 2, demanding the unconditional release of the self-declared leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.

The placard carrying protesters, who wore T-shirts and caps with inscriptions like “Biafra Now or Never”, “Buhari Release Kanu For Us”, “On Biafra We Stand”, yesterday, sang and danced outside the court premises, while hearing was going on in the criminal case that was entered  against Kanu by the federal government.

Meantime, following an order of the court, the Department of State Security, DSS, yesterday, produced the detained Director of Radio Biafra and Television, Kanu.

Chief Magistrate Shauibu Usman had at the last adjourned date, berated the DSS over its failure to produce Kanu in court on two consecutive times the matter came up  before the court.

Magistrate Usman said he was disappointed that the security agency refused to produce Kanu despite an express order of the court.

Consequently, he directed that the accused person must be brought before the court yesterday.

Meanwhile, at the resumed hearing on the matter yesterday, Kanu, who the government accused  of engaging in  criminal conspiracy, managing and belonging to an unlawful society, as well as indulging in criminal intimidation, contrary  to section 97 (a)&(b) and section 397 of the Penal Code, begged to be transferred to prison custody.

President Muhammadu Buhari said on Saturday that Nigeria is entering into its glorious era despite the insecurity and economic challenges.
The President stated this at the graduation of Senior Executive Course 37 of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS) in Kuru, Jos.

Senate President Bukola Saraki Played Errand Boy To Buhari To Stall Corruption Trial

Senate President Bukola Saraki this morning in Abuja, and on the eve of his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), filed an appeal at the Supreme Court asking for a stay of proceedings. Last week, the Court of Appeal had decided that Saraki should face trial, and that the CCT is a competent court for it. Saraki’s action today followed his strange move on Tuesday to appease President Muhammadu Buhari when he personally turned messenger to deliver the list of cleared Ministers to the presidency. Saraki’s move earlier today seemed to follow the conclusion from the meeting between both men that Buhari is not ready to commit to any extra-legal settlement of the issue. It would be recalled that in an interview with SaharaReporters in New York during the United Nations General Assembly, Buhari clearly stated that his trust in Saraki would only be determined by the outcome of his corruption trial.

36 Ministerial appointees in Abuja for two day retreat

The two day retreat for 36 ministerial nominees who were recently screened and confirmed by the Senate recently would kick off today.

Already, the ministers-designate, it was gathered, arrived Abuja last night.

Venue of the retreat is the International Conference Center, ICC, Abuja.

The event which would commence by 9:am is expected to be declared open President Mohammadu Buhari.

It will be recalled that the last batch of the confirmed nominees names was submitted to the president at the presidential villa in Abuja by the president of the senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki on
Tuesday which made the retreat possible.

It is also expected that the inauguration of the appointees would take place soon after the retreat.

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Mrs Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita as the new Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. Mrs Oyo-Ita replaces former occupant, Danladi Kifasi who was sacked on Tuesday, October 20, 2015. No reason was given for the removal of Kifasi, who was due to retire on January, 1, 2016. Before her appointment, Oyo-Ita was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology

President Muhammadu Buhari has announced a professor of political history and international studies, Mahmood Yakubu, as new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). inec new Yakubu The appointment which is to be ratified by the senate was made on Wednesday by the president at the council of state meeting in Abuja. Yakubu, who is a former executive secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund is to take over from the acting chairmanof the commission, Amina Zakari. Following Yakubu’s appointment, Amina Zakari, is now the INEC Commissioner representing the North-West.
