Many years ago I worked as a taxi cab driver.

One time I had to pick up a passenger in the middle of the night. When I arrived at the address, the building was dark, except a light in a ground floor window. Many drivers would wait for a couple of minutes and drive away in such circumstances. But I thought of passengers that might need my assistance. Therefore I always went to the door and knocked. So I did the same this time too. I heard a weak voice of an elderly woman: „Just a minute“. The door opened and I saw a small lady in her 80‘s, wearing a dress and a pillbox hat. She had a small suitcase in her hands.

Oliseh Flown To Belgium For Treatment After Ill-Health Worsens

The former Nigeria captain was reported to have been down with flu before the first leg African Nations Championship qualifying clash with Burkina Faso in Port Harcourt last week.

Oliseh reportedly broke down and asked to be taken abroad for treatment on Thursday.

Sources close to the Super Eagles camp said that palpable fear gripped the camp on Thursday and team and external doctors managed to stabilize his condition before he was taken to Port Harcourt airport en route Belgium.

"His condition has detoririated so much that he had to be flown back to his home in Belgium where he will be attended to by his personal physician. I have never seen him in this state before. It is very bad,"

It was gathered further that the Nigeria Football Federation have been briefed about the development, and have okayed his being flown to Belgium for treatment.

With this development, Oliseh will miss the second leg of the CHAN qualifier against Burkina Faso on Sunday.

One dead in aircraft crash believed to be USAF jet

One person was killed on Wednesday when a military aircraft, believed to be a fighter jet, crashed on farmland after taking off from a U.S. Air Force (USAF) base in eastern England. "A military aircraft which had taken off from RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk came down at about 10.30 a.m. (0930 GMT)," a police spokeswoman said. "We can confirm one fatality and believe there was just one person on board the aircraft." The crash occurred in Redmere near Ely, a rural area about 70 miles (110 km) north of London. "We are hearing reports and we are awaiting further information about it," said a spokeswoman for RAF Lakenheath, where the USAF's 48th Fighter Wing is based, in response to accounts that a U.S. F/A-18 fighter jet had crashed. She said another U.S. base, RAF Mildenhall, was dealing with media inquiries. A spokesman for Mildenhall had no immediate comment. Last year, four crew on board a U.S. Pave Hawk helicopter based at Lakenheath were killed when their aircraft crashed during a training exercise in a rural area on the north Norfolk coast.

Lamar Odom takes steps in Los Angeles, family says

Lamar Odom's family says he has taken a few steps since arriving in Los Angeles, part of what they describe as "miraculous progress" for the former NBA player. In a statement released Tuesday, Odom's aunt JaNean Mercer and the Odom family thanked doctors and nurses who cared for him at a Las Vegas hospital, asking supporters to keep praying for him. "As Lamar begins a new chapter in his road to recovery, PLEASE continue to uplift him and the family in prayer. He continues to make miraculous progress, taking a few steps in Los Angeles. On Tuesday, Kardashian released a statement of her own, thanking doctors and nurses for helping Odom make "incredible strides." "You can never be prepared for an experience like this, but without the outpouring of love and endless prayers that Lamar has received and the strength I was given from my loved ones, it would have been difficult to endure," she said. ex-Bayelsa gov, dies at 62

THE  pioneer  civilian  governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieye-seigha, is dead.

Fondly called DSP and Governor General of Ijaw Nation, when he held sway at Creek Haven, the Bayelsa seat of power, Alamieyeseigha was reported to have died after a brief illness at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

According to family sources, the former governor, though diabetic, developed an unexplained ailment at his hometown, Amassoma, in Southern Ijaw council area of Bayelsa State, and was rushed to the  teaching hospital where he was on life support machine but lost the will to live between 4.30 and 5pm yesterday.

While some said he died of kidney related ailment, others blamed his death on cardiac arrest.

Aged  62, Alamieyeseigha was granted presidential pardon by his erstwhile deputy, former President Goodluck, over his conviction  for corrupt practices as  governor of Bayelsa.

A family source, who spoke anonymously, told Sunday Vanguard the alleged recent request for his extradition by the UK may have triggered blood pressure believed to be the cause of death.

His remains, according to the source, had been deposited at the morgue of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

The alleged  request by the UK for his extradition has been a subject debate in recent times with many Ijaw groups describing it as a political vendetta by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Charles Okah attempts jumping from court’s third floor

Abuja- Security operatives attached to Justice Gabriel Kolawole at the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday prevented Charles Okah, the alleged mastermind of the 2010 Independence Day bombing from committing suicide in court.

Okah, who is standing trial on charges of terrorism, had sought the permission of the judge to speak on what he termed “endless trial,” as his counsel was absent in court.

The judge granted the oral application and permitted Okah to speak for about five minutes.

Okah said: “I have been incarcerated for about five years now and I have a family to cater for. My children would grow up without feeling the warmth of their father and I am tired of this endless trial.  I really do not know what I have done to be treated this way.

“Is it not better to die than to wait and be messed up this way?” he asked.

US gives Nigeria N458bn to reduce poverty by 2020

                        
The United States has given the Nigeria $2. 3 billion (N458 billion) to reduce poverty in the country by 2020, report said.
The Federal Government received the money through the US Agency for International Development in a developmental assistance agreement signed by vice president, Yemi Osinbajoand USAID/Nigeria director, Michael Harvey on Tuesday, September 29, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The agreement is expected to cover activities aimed at reducing extreme poverty in a more stable and democratic society between 2015 and 2020.
According to Harvey, these activities will stimulate inclusive economic growth, promote a healthier, more-educated population, and strengthen good governance.
“This agreement will provide a solid foundation for our two countries to partner together to reduce inequalities across the country,” Harvey said.
The agreement will also align Nigeria’s development plans with sector-specific strategies in various ministries including: health, agriculture, powerand state level government counterparts.
This US/Nigeria agreement is believed to have been facilitated by President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the US and his participation at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The agreement is expected to cover activities aimed at reducing extreme poverty in a more stable and democratic society between 2015 and 2020.

The governor of Cross River State, Professor Ben Ayade, recently an­nounced the intention of his admin­istration to conduct mandatory in­tegrity and aptitude tests for nominees for political appointments.

According to the Special Assistant on Me­dia and Chief Press Secretary to the Gov­ernor, Mr. Christian Ita, the nominees will undergo the aptitude test before their names will be forwarded to the state House of As­sembly for confirmation. The appointment of chairmen and members of state boards, agencies and parastatals, as well as special advisers, will also follow the same process. Similarly, nominees for appointment as commissioners will also undergo the tests.

Diezani Alison-Madueke arrested in London

IMMEDIATE past Petroleum Resources Minister, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, was yesterday arrested with four other people by the UK National Crime Agency. She was however granted bail after she had been detained for  several hours. According to London Police she will be charged to court for money laundering.

Regarded as the most powerful minister in the Dr Goodluck Jonathan Administration, Alison Madueke was arrested yesterday morning for alleged offences relating to money laundering, bribery and corruption being investigated by the UK National Crime Agency, according toPremium Times report.

This is coming as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) last night sealed off her house in Asokoro area of Abuja. The identities of the four other people arrested along with her could not be immediately ascertained as at press time. Two top British officials in London confirmed the development on the condition of anonymity because they had no permission to speak on the issue.

When contacted, the British High Commission in Nigeria confirmed that some arrests were made Friday but declined to disclose the identities of those involved. Joseph Abuku, Press and Public Affairs Officer, said, “This morning, five people between the ages of 21 and 60 were arrested on suspicion of bribery and corruption offences. The crimes are being investigated by the National Crime Agency.

“The National Crime Agency does not confirm identity of any arrest nor provide information that could be used to corroborate the identity of an arrested individual.” Vanguard sources at the UK National Crime Agency also confirmed the arrest and added that the identities of those arrested would be officially disclosed at the point of being charged to court.

15 dead, 41 injured in Abuja bomb blasts

Scene of the Abuja blasts Friday night.

The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, police authorities and the National Emergency Management Agency,  NEMA, have confirmed 15 dead and 41 injured in the multiple blasts in Abuja,  Friday night.

It was learnt that the remains of those killed have been deposited in various hospitals across the city.

The injured were rushed to Kuje General Hospital, National Hospital and Nyanya General Hospital.
